  • Break Stuff — typical DBs are designed for different assumptions
  • Embrace & Extend — smart people have invented good primitives

Assumptions

  • Unbounded replicas, entering and leaving at will
  • Heterogeneous devices
  • Heterogeneous access rights
  • Application diversity on shared data
  • Offline operation (and generally partition tolerant)
  • PACELC — PA/EL
  • Infinite latency
  • Tradeoffs — e.g. not good for financial transactions
